The structure of the Past Perfect Continuous is: subject + had been + verb + -ing


Use of the Past Perfect Continuous:

  Is used for actions which were happening in a period of time before another past event.

Example: 

  - He had been studying for two hours before the lights went out.

  - They had been waiting for the bus for thirty minutes when it finally arrived.
